NLA confirms its readiness to deliberate on organic bills

Thammarat Thadaphrom

BANGKOK, 1 October 2016 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is worried about the limited amount of time it has to work on draft organic laws while reiterating its readiness to discuss them.

NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said the legislature is planning on forming a committee to study draft organic acts. At present, the members of the assembly are screening qualifications of committee candidates which include luminaries, experts, and other knowledgeable individuals.

He admitted that some members of the new committee could come from the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA).

He noted that the legislature is looking into the details of organic bills both the previous ones and the ones being drafted by the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC), the Election Commission (EC), and other independent agencies.

He said the time limit given to the NLA to work on organic bills worried him and prompted the assembly to work even harder to acquire all information available before actually having to discuss it in plenary sessions.

He said there are certain acts that are difficult to understand and contain a lot of details such as the Excise Code Bill and the Civil Procedure Code Bill, both of which consist of more than 100 sections.
