Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha hands out relief bags to flood-affected |residents during his visit to Ayutthaya’s Sena district yesterday.

BANGKOK: -- BANGKOK Metropolitan Administration (BMA) offices in the districts of Don Muang, Lak Si, Sai Mai, Bang Khen and Chatuchak were told to remove obstacles that blocked water drainage via the Bang Khen, Bang Pho and Bang Sue sluice gates, deputy governor Amorn Kitchawengkul said yesterday.

These sluice gates have a combined capacity to drain 14 million cubic metres of water via the Klong Premprachakorn canal, but floodwaters cannot reach the gates due to many obstacles on the way, he said.

This short-term solution was assigned to the five district offices and the BMA Department of Drainage and Sewerage at a meeting on Tuesday following severe flooding, especially in northern Bangkok, on Monday, he said. The floods were triggered by more than 140 millimetres of rain.

It would be funny if not so pathetic that humans should presume to think that they can "control" a river that has flowed in the area of what they now call Thailand for  thousands of years.

In fact most of the land they now claim is "their land" is a gift from the river over deposited over those thousands of years.

The rain that fell far to the north, is now going to the sea as it always has.

Let the puny humans get out of it's way, as it flows to the sea as it has for all that time.

"These sluice gates have a combined capacity to drain 14 million cubic metres of water via the Klong Premprachakorn canal, but floodwaters cannot reach the gates due to many obstacles on the way, he said.  "

At the height of the rainy season, why are these idiots being told to do something that should have been done months ago and as an ongoing measure to ease the outflows.

Always a case of people being told to do jobs for which they are being paid.

I will treat this as a rhetorical question as I don't need another posting holiday. More importantly, I like my car, house and other personal assets, given the defamation laws, it would be unwise for me to offer any further comment.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick. The people who actually do the job are and have been doing their job before, during and after the wet season. Heavy seasonal rain will wash even more crap into the canals, making the job more difficult.

They are not the idiots. The idiots are those in charge telling them to do the job they have been doing, so the idiots in suits/uniforms can feel more important and be seen to be doing something to help the situation, even when they are not.

At first if you don't succeed try try again, until you get it right. Feel extremely sorry for all the families affected by these seasonal down pours in Thailand.

How were these people supposed to know that it would rain ,it isn't like it rains every year is it? I wonder if they are told every day to remember to go work tomorrow

In Thailand it's called FACE-sanity, doing the same sh**** all over again, not willing to listen to criticism and well meant suggestions, and stubbornly refuse to make changes in coordination with modernization, and then hope that the modern world will understand Thai-China-stubborn FACE-sanity culture again.....

Pretty sad when you slam someone for not doing something that you are not capable of doing either from the same position. Actually He has much more power to act than she did.

She is not accused of causing the flood, she is accused of refusing to take available measures to mitigate it.

Two questions spring to mind:

  1. They need to be told to do this?
  2. They're being told to do this now?

Kreng jai would be the official response?

And not keeping the nations drainage system clear of trash ahead of a rainy season is a gross failure to mitigate.

This may surprise you, but most of the trash gets INTO the canals during heavy rain. Now if you have any proof that the canals were not cleaned before the rain, you may have a case, but it would be against the BMA who have the responsibility of cleaning BKK's canals.

Of course you don't have that proof, you are just clutching at straws for a "Little Johnny did it too" defence of Yingluk.

It doesn't matter where the trash comes from, its the fact that it plugged the system that matters. Little Johnny could have learned from past mistakes. He is also in total control of all government entities, the buck stops here. He should now be concentrating on the next possible drought and flood, but I'm sure it is more important to try to spread blame for this mess. So far only denial that there is a problem. I wasn't very happy with the former government either, but that doesn't make this one better, if this new form of government ends the high level of corruption here I would be delighted and very happy to announce it. The fact that this government is spending so much time and money going after the former government in no way means they won't be more of the same. Little Johnny is the one pointing fingers and throwing rocks from his glass house. I am really hoping that he turns this thing  around. The people must vote their leaders in to be a Democracy, anything else is not. Some people's can't handle Democracy, like Iraq's people whom would be much better off with Saddam still in power, No form of government has ever worked very good in history and I'm not sure one ever will in the long run. Good luck and I hope this Government does some good going into the future, and stops dwelling on the past.

This is very puzzling. I know M.R. Sukhumband has been having a feud with the Democrat Party bigwigs, but he used to be a throughly competent administrator. These channels should have been cleared six months ago. Lesson should have been learned from 2011. I'm sure if Yingluck was the Prime Minister this would not have been ignored.

Well, here you are, I have it on good authority that His Generalship prefers the Barbour Tartan Town and Country for slumming in the provinces in the wet weather.
