Kaine and Pence trade blows and barbs at the vice-presidential debate

WASHINGTON: -- In a debate that at times lost political focus Donald Trump’s running mate Mike Pence delivered a calm and assured performance.

The Governor of Indiana, a former talk-show host, rode the blows of his Democratic opponent Tim Kaine with out landing any himself.

His success lay in the fact he avoided any of the hyperbole associated with the Trump ticket.

Euronews Washington correspondent Stefan Grobe assess the event:

“The vice-presidential debate did not see a knockout winner, but Republican Indiana Governor Mike Pence won on points. That’s the general feeling amongst analysts on the day after.

Democratic Virginia Senator Tim Kaine also had some strong moments being at times a bit too aggressive for someone who represents the leading ticket in the polls.

The problem for Republicans though is that Pence was everything that his running mate Donald Trump was not in his first debate with Hillary Clinton. Pence was calm, competent and coherent.

Trump who doesn’t like to be upstaged will now not only be compared against Clinton but also against his own running mate.

As for Pence he might have laid the ground work for his own campaign in 2020.”

Pence's main job at the debate was to deflect and/or sugar-coat whichever of Trump's discretions were aired. He's adept at not addressing questions.  Even the moderator said so several times, and she was milktoast.    He's like the kid who is asked why he didn't tie his shoes, and responds, "what's for lunch?"

Latest numbers from NRP on how America's electoral votes will likely go.  Interesting graphics at that web page.

Even if Trump were to win ALL the states which are close, he would still be 2 electoral votes short of a win.  Keep screwing up Trump/Pence.  Keep those tweets a-'comin'! The entertainment value is great, particularly for talk show hosts.

They were both good, but Pense was better. I just wish these guys were the presidential candidates instead of of the two poor ones that we are on offer.

I would not call it good, but much more presidential than especially Trump. Kaine wanted too much, and let Pence get away with not addressing the Trump issues.

They didn't "TRADE BLOWS" as the headline states.  They shook hands and were civil.

Sometimes news headlines go overboard in their zeal to gain viewers.   It's low class.

Yeah, the "blows" remark is off base but the "barbs" is correct. They did "nip" at each other at times but never did they devolve into anything really dirty or underhanded.

If anyone watched the 5 or so minutes after the debate ended, you can see that the two VP nominees and their families actually shook hands and talked among each other. It was nice to see. It does show you that what was said during the debate wasn't really meant to be damning of the other VP nominee but of their Presidential nominees. Good politics.
