Probably be cancelled.  Nation's in mourning....

Loy Krathong hasn't been cancelled, just Yee Ping,  the parades and other organized events.  The River Market event on 14 November is just outside the 30 day mourning period, so I assume celebration will be allowed, though not necessarily approved of.

I do agree that 4000 baht is a lot.  I'll probably just go to the river with a friend, float a krathong, light a lantern, then find something else to do.

I didn't say LK was cancelled, but I think this event at River Market falls into the category of events that will be cancelled.    Or it will be toned down into an event not worth a fraction of the asking price.

I can't think of a better way to honor His Majesty than a huge launch of lanterns, wafting heavenwards. As for fireworks, parades, and beauty pageants, these all seem more dispensable at this time.

The trouble with B2500 is it doesn't keep the diff raff out. There's always a few "new money" plebs who are willing to pay. At B4000, hopefully any that do make it can be easily ignored.

Apparently, you're not seeing what other five star events are charging for that evening and what I'm seeing with today's emails -- they aren't cancelling.   River Market is one of the few places where you can launch a kratong in the river and a khom loy into the sky AND watch the action along the river and the lights of the Iron Bridge.    I just hope they're able have the fireworks display; that's another reason the River Market event is special.

I'm not sure why people are upset by the Duke's price increase. They're a commercial venture if they think they can sell all their tickets at 4,000 Baht - fair play to them. If they can't they'll learn a harsh economic lesson and charge less next time. They're not required to charge what people think is reasonable at all.

Given that you can see lanterns, etc. from many places in the city; there's no-one being deprived by their actions.

I think River Market is probably the best location in the city to view Loy Krathong and the event that Dave is planning is very all-inclusive.  Will Hubby and I be there?  Probably not -- don't want to spend more than 1/2 our monthly rent on a night out to see an event we've experienced numerous times already.

But, if we were new to Chiang Mai, had friends/family in town, or were tourists ourselves it would be just perfect.  We've spent W-A-Y more than 4000 baht on Broadway show tickets and not had as good a time as folks will have on November 14 at River Market.

Sure; I too have spent WAY more than 4000 baht on a good night in Pattaya, and that was mostly by myself.

Right, that's my take completely.  Not upset, it's a free country, economically, but I think it's worth pointing out that there was a 2500 to 4000 Baht jump, with some exclamation marks.
