Renewal of my retirement visa in December. My UK passport expires in August 2017. Does passport have to be valid for 12 months to be granted the visa

Assuming you're asking about renewing an extension of stay based on retirement the answer is no, but they will not issue the full 1 year extension, and will only give you permission to stay until Aug '17.

You have two choices --

1.  Renew the passport now and get a full 12 month extension but lose 10 months of passport validity.

- or -

2.  Renew the extension up to August '17, get the new passport in July and renew the extension again then for 12 months. That'll lose 2 months extension now, but save 10 months passport.

Your choice :)
