People nationwide have been expressing their heartfelt sorrow at the passing of His Majesty.

Our pictures show events in the northern gateway town of Nakorn Sawan and on the road south at Hua Hin on Friday evening.

In Nakorn Sawan thousands gathered for a candle lighting vigil at Sawan Park where a nine minute silence was observed by the grieving public.

Many were in tears as they sang a song that refers to the Thai proverb that translates as "sticking gold leaf on the back of a Buddhist image".

This proverb is like the English proverb "doing good by stealth" and epitomizes the actions of people who do good deeds without seeking public recognition.

As people thought of His Majesty in this regard many wept in abject grief.

In Hua Hin a crowd of at least 10,000 people gathered outside the Klai Kangwol Palace where His Majesty spent many happy times.

Tourists joined with locals dressed in somber clothing in expressing their heartfelt condolences at the tragic news of His Majesty's death on Thursday.
