‘No order’ to remove portraits

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- THE government has not issued any order instructing state officials around the country to remove portrait photos or drawings of His Majesty the King from government offices, signs or public places, as rumoured on social media, Government Spokesman Lt-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday.

Some portraits of the King have been removed in some areas, possibly because of the need for redecoration as the government has instructed the public how to decorate the King's portraits properly according to tradition, he said.

Black and white ribbons need to be attached to the portraits, according to the instruction. People who have taken down the portraits should quickly put them up again, he added.

BANGKOK: -- The Government yesterday denied rumour spreading in the social media saying it has ordered the removal of pictures of the late King erected at all public places and government offices.

The denial by government spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd came after rumour was widely spread about the removal order.

The spokesman insisted strongly the government has not ordered the removal of pictures of the late King as indicated by some social media posts.

Instead, he insisted that photos or paintings of the late king can still be installed either in front of buildings or state agencies or public places.

The spokesman’s clarification also was in response to a complaint by Somkiat Osotsapa who wrote on his Facebook page that authorities were removing pictures of the late King from public places.

The poster asked the government not to do so despite the end of His Majesty’s reign.

His post was later widely shared.
