CNRP Blocked From Holding Anniversary

Phnom Penh City Hall has provisionally denied a request made by the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) to hold a ceremony in the capital’s Freedom Park to mark the 25th anniversary of the Paris Peace Agreements, it announced yesterday, as civil society and international groups continue to urge the government to respect the principles of the agreements. City Hall spokesman Mean Chanyada said that after a meeting between the governor and CNRP members, permission to hold the public event was denied pending a final decision from the Interior Ministry.
 

“City Hall and the party have agreed to hold this request for the Interior Ministry to decide,” he said. He said the reason for the decision was the expected 7,000-strong crowd for the proposed event on Sunday would have exceeded the allowed maximum of 200.


Instead, the party was told to celebrate at its headquarters in the south of the city, or anywhere private that will accept them, he added. The Paris agreements, signed by 18 nations on October 23, 1991, brought about the official end to fighting between Cambodia and Vietnam.
