Labour leader cries foul against new minimum wage rates

A labour leader cried foul against the Wage Committee’s decision to raise minimum wages from 5-10 baht and to freeze the wages in some provinces as unfair and unrealistic.

Mr Chalee Loisoong, vice president of the Thai Labour Solidarity Committee, said the Wage Committee’s decision was a big letdown because there are several provinces which were not given any wage increase at all.

A maximum increase of 10 baht is just a chicken’s feed compared to the present circumstances, he said, noting that most of the southern provinces were denied any increase at all despite the fact that people in the region are living a tough life and should be entitled to higher pay.

I bet his words echo in many families.

unless limited to large firms, I think minimum wages are wrong.

indicative salaries published by unions and the government are better.

Maybe so, but with the exception of 2012, long-suffering Thai workers on minimum daily wage have been eating a lot of bird seed over the last 10 years !!!

Economist propaganda separating and dividing the  country,

if the minimum wage is increased it has to be across the

whole country, after that any negotiations for further wage increase

can come from the employee, contractor or employer,

where you live has nothing to do with a government set basic wage,

you either have a Standard, or you Discriminate against your own people.

So the cost of living is the same all over Thailand?

Phuket vs Nan for example?

The subject is basic wage not the cost of living

linked yes, but it is the bottom line of the wage earned for one day

I'm sorry but I disagree with your statement regarding where a person lives and the link to minimum wage.

Tourist destinations are more expensive in every single way which includes the locals as well such as accommodation, food, transport,  power/water/elec.

A  5-10 baht wage increase is an insult compared to the salary increases the gov't like to give themselves.

It's the same snot in every country.

Crying foul as in something smells? The public must realize that after all the military expenditures and train tracks to nowhere the kitty is almost empty. Crumbs for the masses. Its amazing how a country any country will go all out to "protect" you and keep you safe. They worry so much about you the voter that they visit you every 4 years bearing gifts. They feed you enough crumbs to barely substain you from election to election. They give you a constitution to protect themselves and you well not so much. They keep shouting about doing things for the "people" with tanks parked on the corner. Its called Democracy.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I now understand why young Thai girls want to hook up with us old fat Falangs. I guess we have done something right in life to be able to come here and retire in "luxury"

there needs to be a single minimum wage across thailand. if it is more expensive to live some where workers will not go there until wages go up in that area. government needs to stay of of it and let the market place balance out.
