A 58 year old German man has set off for Bangkok on foot to pay his respects to His Majesty the departed king Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Seeing Hartmut Beren off yesterday was Yasothorn governor Buntham Lertsukheekasem who presented him with a black shirt for encouragement.

Hartmut - a name which means "brave mind" in English - expects to take 30 days before he reaches the Grand Palace where his intention is to sign the book of condolences for a man who he greatly admires.

Also there to see him off yesterday was his wife Nit Beren who he met and married 16 years ago in Phuket.

The couple moved to Germany where Hartmut was a design engineer but moved back to Thailand two years ago to build a house in Nit's Yaso hometown.

The couple are based in the village of Ban Kham Hi in Khan Dai Yai district.

Hartmut said that he felt very sad when he heard the news of the passing of the king and decided to make the pilgrimage to the capital.

He is dragging a cart with a tent and other possessions with him. He will sleep along the way in his tent.

He called for the Thai people to love each other and understand the great deeds and sacrifices that the beloved monarch made for his people.
