Police prepare for traffic paralysis as schools reopen

BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan Police are devising a strategy to cope with traffic congestion that is expected to be worse than usual when the second semester starts at the end of this month.

Pol Maj General Jirapat Phumjit, acting deputy city police chief, said the planning meeting yesterday heard that the traffic volume caused by parents dropping off and picking up their children at schools would add to the already high volume on roads caused by royal events and infrastructure projects.

The only news this is that it happens every year and nothing is done to fix the problem properly. Many countries have had similar issues but seem to fix it. Why not Thailand?

School Buses, Car Pools, Time changes different from workers are just a few simple ideas that have worked.

I guess I will be waiting for Next October or May to see this article gain.

Just read the article without looking at the picture. So the man on the motor bike has 4 people on besides himself. He has  a helmet on, so no selfishness there.

How about the police actually enforcing the law, that might help with the traffic congestion.

Motorbikes deserve their own lane, it's very selfish to occupy the road with a big car and cause congestion while on motobikes many more people could have used the same road without congestion.

And the police is just a joke, they never do anything and even cause more congestion.

Looks like the short-term plan to solve Bangkok's traffic problems, supposedly submitted to Prayut by the Transport Ministry last month, must have failed (https://is.gd/H46xaA)!

As for Prawit giving authorities one month to ease traffic in Bangkok - well gentlemen, your time is up (https://is.gd/luFCHJ)!

To successfully enforce the law would mean that bike multiplying by four and adding to congestion !

Not at all. Why does  it take two adults to take them to school? How about getting the bus? There are may options. Who knows the school could be in walking distance, Now there is a novel idea walking to school. I see here and in the UK so not isolating Thailand cars and bikes taking children a few hundred metres to school.

oh I fully agree with you, but My ex Thai wife for example used to get in the car to visit her Thai friend 200 yards down the road, so good luck persuading them to walk !

I understand it will never happen and wouldn't even try to argue. It would be good for the government to do something like Bike for Dad (as an example) or another initiative getting children to school safely, reducing congestion and generally promoting health.:coffee1:

The NEW relocated van terminal at Ekkamai,... Hint hint.....

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

As long as the parents need to show off their car nothing will change. Some send their driver to pick up the rascals hours early, so they can park near the entrance and the poor kids don't have to use their degenerated legs to walk a few meters to the car waiting with running engine and aircon for hours. :post-4641-1156693976:

i hope that pictures with 4 children +  1 driver goes viral around the world ...

no helmet, except for driver

the rest can be replaced ?

What is the exact date anyway for school to start?  I thought that would be the most important part of the news.

" "...Police prepare for traffic paralysis as schools reopen..." "

Yes, despite their failures in so many other areas of police work - traffic paralysis is something they are very good at.

Which countries ?  Every country in the world has kids that cry " Mommy please drive me to school "

And of course they do. So this means on the first day of school, you get 5-10 % more cars on the roads.

Fix the kids/mommy's , and you fixed the problem.

A fine photo with the article title.  A fine family man with three kids and a woman on his bike, none of them wearing helmets.

Finland, Sweden,  Many States in the US to name a few have buses and transport laid on.

The Kalenjin of Kenya certainly don't do the 'mommy drive me to school' thing.. Whilst the extreme, my point is that countries have fixed this driving to school problem. Here in Bangkok I know of families who take their cars, motorbikes and drive their kids to school whilst a 2 minute walk over the bridge would get them there, instead of a 20 minute drive to the u turn (in a big queue) and then to school.

enforce the law they will need 3 motorbikes to get the 5 of them moving. that would triple congestion.

Simple answer is that it costs money.

Let's implement the Helicopter in the air plan so as to be able to lift  broken down vehicles and other obstructions out of the way to ease traffic flow as was proposed many a moon back by a ''Transport Minister and later Prime Minister.''
