BP sells U.S. crude oil to Thailand, Australia for first time: sources

By Florence Tan | SINGAPORE

BP plans to ship 1 million barrels of U.S. crude to Thailand and Australia for the first time, three trade sources said on Wednesday, as the company steps up American oil exports to meet demand in the Asia-Pacific region.

The cargo will add to at least four shipments of U.S. crude by BP to Asia earlier this year after the United States government lifted a decades-old ban on crude exports in late 2015.

Traders are keen to ship more U.S. oil to Asia, but falling shale oil output and a narrow price spread between West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent have kept the arbitrage window closed for most of this year.

Didn't BP try to export oil a few years ago

Without a ship :whistling:

Yes they did, exported it to the US, ruined much of the Gulf of Mexico and much of the Louisiana coast. Good movie out about the disaster and the loss of lives, Deep Water Horizon. Some top brass should have gone to jail for manslaughter. I grew up in that part of SE Texas/SW Louisiana Gulf Coast and knew many people that worked the rigs.

There was also US companies like Halliburton involved but they did not get the same treatment as BP

And the subsidiary that didn't do all the required maintenance. Someone should have paid the price for ruining a lot of livelihoods.

and what about Transocean? Their name was kept out of the spotlight and it was their rig. They were the final decision makers. Client can ask for something but at the end of the day the management of drilling company is responsible. Transocean crawled out of the <deleted> pit smelling of roses. Why They and Halliburton were kept protected was that they were in American waters under US government. Protecting their own. And yes some of those should be in jail now. All safety systems turned to manual not auto along with a lot more deficiencies. Transocean talk the talk but do not walk the walk. And yes I have worked for them so have see it first hand.

Transocean is a Swiss registered company.  At the time of the disaster, Halliburton was a Dubai registered company.

There's quite a bit of significance in BP exporting US oil overseas after decades of laws against it, but this isn't on that list.
