Illegal Logger Loses Foot to Landmine on Thai Border

Featured Replies

A man believed to be attempting to cross into Thailand to illegally log wood had his foot blown off  in Preah Vihear province after he stepped on a landmine on Tuesday. Choam Ksan commune acting police chief Mey Makara told Khmer Times that the incident happened somewhere on the Dangrek mountain range in Choam Ksan district’s Chheuteal Kaong village, which forms part of the natural border between Cambodia and Thailand.

“At about 2pm he entered the forest in the Dangrek mountains where there are plenty of unexploded landmines, to log wood or likely to illegally cross into Thailand,” Mr. Makara said. The man was identified as 25-year-old Khan Khly from Kampot province, who was living in Chheuteal Kaong village and working as an illegal logger.

“After the explosion, his company brought him to Chheuteal village and then sent him to the provincial hospital where his right foot was amputated,” he said. “We don’t know what kind of landmine it was. Only illegal migrants cross that area to go to Thailand for illegal logging.”
