An elderly friend of mine (American) has lived in Thailand for several years, and renews his O retirement visa annually. He's temporarily in wheelchair, and should be able to go to local immigration office for 90 day reporting, by his 90th day which will be 24 December. He worries, though, that in September, he might be worse off, when his current visa expires.

It's a long way off in his case, ten months. Anyway, his question is, what would he do if he gets to the renewal/extension annual date, and is physically unable to go into the immigration office? Can he get a doctor's statement, or can he appoint a proxy to go for him? He has adequate funds, income, status, etc. to qualify for the renewal (assuming they don't move the goalposts again, and require 89 million baht deposited at 1% in Thailand :o ).

Another question: my friend's 90 day reporting is due December 24, and we're not positive he'll be out of the wheelchair by then. Can he have his friends drop it off when they go downtown (Hua Hin), and do they need to take his passport with them?

Passport will be required and I would write a short letter with the persons name doing the run and signed just in case it is asked for, but don't believe anyone checks for that.

As I recall Sunbelt has mentioned the annual extension can be done by a law office but believe he said the first time both must appear together at immigration so will let them answer on details; am sure something can be worked out with doctors certificate if he is not able to travel.
