BANGKOK: -- BAAC deputy manager Adul Kanchanawat said on Tuesday that the bank’s role was to set up the One Tambon One SME project which aims to set up one small-sized enterprise (SME) in each tambon to give support to farmers in all aspects, including production, quality development, marketing and financing to strengthen the capability of farmers so, hopefully, in the future they can become an engine to drive the country’s economy forward.

He said BAAC aims to set up 72,000 SMEs throughout the country and set aside 72 billion baht to realize the project. He added that the bank would provide the necessary financing while its two other partners – the Mall Group and Thai Agro Exchange Company – will help in the marketing of the farmers’ farm products.

Mrs Lakhana Navirote of The Mall Group said the group was pleased to have a chance to join the project to help improve the livelihood of the farmers by providing channels for the farmers to sell their products.

She said the group had customers who have high purchasing power to afford premium-grade farm products and the group’s Gourmet markets and Home Fresh Mart have been widely recognized as outlets for premium-grade products and foodstuffs.
