Under modernisation programme, farmers will have to adapt or lose government aid: Prayut

BANGKOK: -- PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha has unveiled the new features of a 20-year programme to modernise the country’s agricultural sector to solve depressed prices and other chronic problems on a longer-term basis.

During his visit to the Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives Ministry, Prayut said the government should review the programme’s targets every five years with the objective of upgrading agriculture workers into “smart farmers”.

The government will also promote big-size farms that gain from economies of scale and higher bargaining power when dealing with middlemen, while more than 800 farm cooperatives nationwide will play a major role in implementing this policy.

Heavy duty plans! Looks like another 5 years of this government, possibly 20.

And so another 20 year plan is born

To the "end of corruption" we can now add "smart farmers"

Now his plan is beginning to unfold:  in 2 decades we're gonna have a nation of incorruptible rice growing rocket scientists

Sounds a sensible polkicy to me!

All this guy does is " Word Spinning " .

He thinks that Catch phrases will make the public believe he is doing something !

Let's do the math. Most of not all farmers are above 50+ and there are no next generation taking over this back breaking and debt mired profession. We might not even have a next generation of farmers in 20 years time and the junta PM want to train them to be smart. Sound like an idiotic plan. Maybe he should start by having a plan to encourage younger and the educated to farming.

That is the most idiotic policy they could possibly use.  Modernizing Farming will increase production at least two fold, how in the hell is that going to help. That said with the big farm preference he has stated the big farmers { HI- SO } will start to take most of the land. When this is accomplished then there will be a big farm program in the government with huge subsidies for the Hi-So farmers. Just sit back and watch

What would I suggest, 100% organic farming, decreasing production to one third. This will make a big improvement for the hard working farmers, the lazy ones will suffer, as they lay in their hammocks and watch the weeds grow. The chemical companies being Hi-So people, this will have no chance of happening.

Someone playing too much simulation games.

Good idea ,in 20 years it will be part of china so their problem then

Geeze another road map to no where plan. He must have read Chairman Mao's 5 year model of doing things. Warning farmers you either get smart or he turns off the money tap. I am glad I have a front row seat to watch this unfold. Sadly I am running out of time to watch the final curtain come down. I do have a vivid imagination though.

Yes I just hope he did not borrow Harry Dent's model.

More like Smart Farmers Daughters. :)
