Thai govt to monitor Trump's economic policy

BANGKOK, 17 November 2016 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said Thailand is ready to become a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), should U.S. President-elect Donald Trump decide to keep the trade agreement alive.

Dr. Somkid revealed it would be important for Thailand to wait and see who the new U.S. President would choose to handle economic policy, which he believed would differ from previous administrations.

The government will observe and gauge the possible impact his policy will have on Thailand and the rest of the world. He further added that Thailand will have to be ready to join the TPP should the government consider it worthwhile, even if the Kingdom is already a party to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

He also cited the need for Asian nations to forge stronger ties if Trump decides to discontinue the TPP. Dr. Somkid claimed RCEP would be the only gateway for Thailand to trade with other major continents. He noted that requirements for signatories of the RCEP are less stringent compared to those of the TPP.

The Thai government will also have to focus on ASEAN and the CLMVT to increase trade volumes. Meanwhile, the Deputy Prime Minister said the reason the U.S. is avoiding trade with China is because the country wants to preserve domestic jobs.

Instead of monitoring, why not embrace free trade in some way ?   Trump may not scrap the TPP if there was more free trade in the region.  Thailand has a chance, in spite of its unelected government, to make a good first impression.

NEWSFLASH: The government of Thailand will actually monitor the economic policies of one of the biggest and most powerful countries on the planet!

How clever of them! :coffee1:

thought the guy was busy enough trying to run yingluck out of town. guess he can delegate that task.

If I can read in between the lines of Dr. Somkid's comment, he has given up hopes on TPP which is now in an induced coma. There is now a vacuum in Asia and China will gladly step right in. Thailand has pivoted towards China and the geopolitics reality plus the economic policies now are hard for Thailand to resist. Joining the RCEP seem a natural progression for Thailand and the other Asian countries and even Australia. They really have no choice as TPP is destined to be binned by Trump and USA influence in Asia Pacific will fade.

The big loser, here, will be Thailand, not the US. Lots of interesting info about Thai tariffs: https://ustr.gov/sites/default/files/Thailand.pdf

The U.S. goods trade deficit with Thailand was $13.9 billion in 2011, up $182 million from 2010. U.S. goods exports in 2011 were $10.9 billion, up 21.7 percent from the previous year. Corresponding U.S. imports from Thailand were $24.8 billion, up 9.4 percent. Thailand is currently the 27th largest export market for U.S. goods.

Thailand had a chance to join last year, same as Vietnam. Their choice, they said no.

TPP is Dead. It doesn't matter, what the Thai Government thinks now.

Even Clinton said she would not keep it.

So you are wrong.

They have this part down to a science. They always keep an eye on uncle Xi to see what he does and approves off.

What Trump said and what he does next year will be 2 different things. There is the Trump that made ridiculous statements, promises, etc. all the things that his political machine perceived that the electors wanted to hear. Then there is the Trump that must get along with the house and senate to get things done. Trump is akin to the steps one goes through when notified that they have a terminal illness. Fear, anger and acceptance. Although in this case I think the anger superseded the fear part.

Sorry moving along is not my style. Trying to educate the uneducated is.

If anyone is unclear how this unscrupulous bully of a  business man does business maybe this will enlighten...  http://money.cnn.com/2016/03/28/news/trump-apartment-tenants/

Now he thinks he is going to bully his way around the world, it is not just he who will have a bloody nose, America will get hurt.

What does "monitoring Trump's policy" (on anything) actually mean? Reading the newspapers?

Trump is the only teacher. Watch him teach the world.
