Military police in Oddar Meanchey province are investigating the murder of Second Lieutenant Am Kun, who died on Saturday night at his base in Trapaing Prasath district after being shot in the head with an AK-47 rifle as he slept in his hammock, while a fellow soldier suggested the death may have been an accident. Lieutenant Colonel Kong Samrith, the deputy provincial military police commander, told Khmer Times yesterday that his officers were working “hard” to identify suspects in what has officially been determined to be a murder.

The body of Sec. Lt. Kun was discovered at 7am on Sunday morning by fellow soldiers, he said, although the gunshot was suspected of having been inflicted closer to midnight. “According to the victim’s body and the mark of injury on his head, this is a case of murder because he one bullet was shot into his temple which caused him to die inside his hammock,” he said, ruling out possible suicide.

He said that the murder of Sec. Lt. Kun, an officer working in the Kor 1 military intelligence unit in the province, had come as a great surprise to his fellow soldiers. “The military police are working hard to investigate this case to find the truth and justice for the victim and his family and to bring the offender to be punished by the law,” he added.

Shot in the head with an AK-47 while sleeping... that qualifies as a possible 'accident' in Cambodia??

Why not?

One soldier sleeping in a barracks while another soldier mishandles his weapon and accidentally discharges a round.

Without more details it is plausable it was accidental every bit as much as intentional.

An investigation would be necessary.

Hmmm... why would anyone be 'mishandling' a weapon around midnight? And how does fire off an AK-47 in the middle of the night and no-one hear it? Body was only discovered in the morning. I'd be curious just how 'popular' (or not) this particular officer was at camp...

But I agree -- investigation is certainly necessary...
