Recently purchase a 3D printer from aliexpress and it has arrived and is being held by Customs, the  service rep at Fedex has told me I need an import permit.

Can anyone shed some light on this, why would a hobby level Bt9,000 3D printer need an import permit and how do I go about obtaining one ?

Well after opening the parcel they have now declared it as s a 3D printer (surprise surprise, that's what it says on the invoice) used to manufacture parts and now want to see my business documents !!

whats that anti corruption phone number ?

well lots of back and forth bullshit but it turns out the issue is 3D printers are on the prohibited import list as they can be used to print guns, i guess that's why there is no import duty on them !!

We all have a friend who has a friend who knows someone high ranking official right, well turns out my work colleagues sister is that person and she knows someone high up in the customs dept.

With a bit more probing and question asking it turns out that Yes, 3D printers are illegal to import however, there is a list naming which printers are illegal and mine is not on that list and is being delivered tomorrow and some low level grub at customs will not be getting his son a free printer for Xmas !!

I've just had the same call from DHL for the exact same reason.

@Don, I don't suppose you'd care to share your work colleague's sister's high up customs contact would you? :D

I contacted a few logistics companies, only one has got back to me so far, 9880 Baht, which is more than the printer.

Very very frustrating.

In the same situation now with my SLA printer stuck with DHL or Thai customs. Is there a way to find this list of 3D-printers exempted from the import restrictions?

Well, old thread but seems actual topic. Ordered a Ender-3 pro from Lazada, was hoping to avoid then the custom BS. After a week they cancelled the order, well good enough it was CoD. However, the same seller and the same item are still listed on Lazada, morons.

Interesting - does this ban include printers for commercial use?

Have been thinking about trying to get things printed in Thailand that I currently use Shapeways for. I've not found anyone yet offering a 3d printing service - is this why ?
