New law on political parties a magic pill for democracy?

New law on political parties a magic pill for democracy?

BANGKOK: -- The ideal of representative democracy, in which politicians and parties truly reflect the voices of the people, is a tough one to reach. But Thailand is taking another shot, with reformers and legal experts once again attempting to lay the foundations.

Politics that is genuinely representative of the popular will has been a rarity in Thai history. Our political parties and politicians have instead been dominated by special interests – a situation that undermines not only their ability to represent constituents, but also the spirit of democracy itself.

Organic constitutional law on political parties now being written offers fresh hope that parties could be liberated from such domination.

Depends on the degree of corruption that has eaten into the heart of the populace...

A country cannot beat it's own Karma! Germany and Japan had their lessons.

Political parties and politicians are supposed to be dominated by special interests, but those interests, in practice, are much broader and more beneficial to the general public than the ones that unelected rulers are dominated by.

They aren't trying to salvage popular democracy or "get it right this time." They are trying (and succeeding) in getting rid of it in all but name.

Parties and politicians will be ultimately beholden to the military and its rulers and so will be totally unable to distribute political largesse, undoubtedly choosing to line only their own pockets (their reward for loyalty) rather than doing both. We've seen this play out already several times in the country's history, so we don't need disingenuous articles about how it's going to be different this time.

Yeah fellas take these,- oh no you took the black one again...?

But no PM elected by direct election - that would be too much of a democratic participation.

Better to provide mechanisms in the draft 2016 constitution that will allow an elected PM to be removed and an unelected PM to be appointed - a magic poison pill required by the junta.

Magic pill? Seems that they just want everyone to take the blue pill. No not THAT blue pill, the one in the film, The Matrix:

The name derives from a scene in the 1999 film The Matrix, in which Laurence Fishburne offers Keanu Reeves a choice: “You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Nothing has changed really. Just trying to may a silk purse out of something. Make it palatable for the masses. Its like flavored Cod Liver Oil.

Political parties are by definition criminal institutions !

There can not be democracy as long as there are political parties

as it's always the party-line that sets policies and not the

will of the people.

A "representative" democracy is nothing else than a bad joke !

So elected people are alledged dominated by special interests, but appointed people (or even self-appointed) are paragons of virtue. And there are people who believe this fairy tale...
