Heavy rains forecast for southern provinces this week

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains in four southern provinces this week and lower temperatures in the upper tier of the country.

The department issued warnings that heavy rain would envelop the southern provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat beginning Wednesday and Thursday Dec 6-7.

Strong winds and waves as high as two to four metres are expected in the Gulf of Thailand, with small boats advised to stay ashore from Monday through Thursday (Decrmber 4-7).

Meanwhile, a moderate high pressure system from China extends to cover the upper part of Thailand, causing the temperature to drop in the North and the Northeast.

The weather department said Typhoon Durian which hit the Philippines, leaving more than 400 people dead and nearly 600 people missing, was downgraded to the category of a tropical storm with 110 kilometre per hour winds.

Philippine President Gloria Arroyo has declared a "state of national calamity" and authorised the immediate release of a billion pesos (US$20 million) to rehabilitate affected areas.

The storm is expected to make a landfall in Vietnam Monday night before weakening and will have little impact on Thailand.

Nonetheless, it remains potent enough that Vietnamese authorities have evacuated tens of thousands of people in its south-central provinces from the path of the approaching storm.

Last nicht 11:00 pm a short but intense downpour in the Mae Nam Area of Ko Samui.

Today, fine and sunny, as evening approaches it's getting cloudy and very humid.

Cnn World Weather has a fine Satellite picture about SEA Region and a animated Version too!

There one can see that the Cyclon lost it's "Eye" just before landfall in Vietnam, becoming a tropical depression.
