BANGKOK: -- THE CENTRAL Administrative Court yesterday ordered the government to comply fully with constitutional clauses related to public consultations and an Environment and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) before beginning construction of the planned Mae Wong Dam.

The order was given to four accused persons and organisations – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Cabinet, the director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department, and the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry.

The court ruling came after 151 people, led by Stop Global Warming Association’s president Srisuwan Janya, lodged a complaint against the project.

Ah, a bit of respite! ............ this is a ridiculous project with little or no science to support it which makes one wonder why over the past 30 years it keeps rearing its ugly head. (Actually i'm not free to discuss why)

If it goes ahead there are serious health, environmental and social issues that may arise.

Furthermore it could well bring about the decimation or even extinction of the wild tiger population in Thailand...and this after they have just reported a tiny increment in the tiger population in that area - it just doesn't make sense to destroy the only proven working tiger environment in Thailand - how dat ca you get?

Will be appealed or ordered under Article 44.

For years we were unable to sell our house in that province because of the threat of the dam and possible flooding of our land.  Then in 2014, the Junta and local Amphur officials arrived to deny any future sale as, like all the owners of houses in the villages in that area, we did not have full Chanote title, although a small amount of tax was paid to the Amphur Office each year to register us as the owners, with the suggestion that Chanote title could be obtained in future when a detailed survey of the whole area was carried out.

It would appear that the Junta'a order in 2014 to owners in these villages was to ensure that no compensation would have to be paid when the dam was built.

This has been mooted already - I think the court decision was in reply to that.

Definitley one for the environmental forum.

This is on e of the most crucial eco-issues in the Kingdom as it sets the  general precedent or tone for policies on conservation against ...well whatever is the current excuse for building this dam.

Speed bump for Mae Wong Dam?

Thailand destroyed over half their forests by the end of the 20th century and their needs to be great care taken to preserve what's left......they are not just "pretty" they are a vital part of Thailand's future - water, air and business all rely on a healthy environment.
