In an effort to assist the contentious demarcation of the Cambodia-Vietnam border, the leaders of the two countries have agreed to seek French assistance, as Prime Minister Hun Sen again repeated calls for Vietnam to halt construction in border areas. Mr. Hun Sen and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the decision on the sidelines of a summit in Siem Reap City yesterday, Kao Kim Hourn, the delegate minister to the premier, told reporters.

“Samdech [Hun Sen] has proposed that for the areas that have yet to be agreed for demarcation, no construction shall be built and be respected for the agreement…and for the areas that have been approved they shall be demarcated faster,” he said. Mr. Kim Hourn said that both leaders had agreed to expedite a letter requesting assistance from France to provide technical experts to help convert existing maps from a scale of 1:100,000 to a more detailed 1:50,000.

This will be used to assist border demarcation between border posts 30 to 40 in Rattanakiri province and posts 138 to 147 in Svay Rieng province, as approved in a meeting on the issue in Ho Chi Minh City in March. He added that Cambodian border committee vice-president Long Visalo will represent Cambodia in drafting the joint letter.
