Record-setting Pawina wins gold in women's weightlifting

Doha - Pawina Thongsuk broke the clean and jerk world record on her way to winning gold in the 63kg category in women's weightlifting at the Asian Games in Doha, Qata Monday.

Her Gold medal was the second for Thailand after Women's Shooting Team won the first medals earlier.

Pawina, 27, who was gold medalist in Athens Olympics gold in the 75kg category, lifted 110kg in the snatch and a new world record 142kg in the clean and jerk for an aggregate of 252kg.

China's world champion Ouyang Xiaofang won silver with a total of 247kg, forfeiting her final clean and jerk after she collapsed in agony during her second attempt.

Burma's Faw Thaw Yae took bronze with an aggregate of 227kg.

Earlier Thai shooting women's team earns first Gold Medal for the country in the Doha Asian Games on Monday.

The women's 50m Rifle Prone Team; comprising Thanyalak Chotpaibunsin, Paramaporn Ponglakham and Supamas Wankaew, won the Gold Medal, with China Team won Silver and Kazakhstan Bronze medals.

Meanwhile Thanyalak Chotpaibunsin won the silver medal in the women's 50m rifle prone individual.

Thailand is now ranking the sixth among 45 countries contesting in the Games with one Gold Medal, four Silver and two Bronze medals. China tops the list with 31 Gold, 12 Silva and 8 Bronze medals, followed by Japan and South Korea.

To put it in perspective a bit, I was just browsing through my motorcycle brouchere and stopped when I saw that it weighs 101 kg.

She hoisted that weight and much more over her head... :D

I remember when she won her gold at the Athens Olympics - I was at as seafood restaurant in Ratchada and there was a guy in the restaurant with a microphone giving his own commentry to the proceedings. Most surreal - I never did consider women's weightlifting much of a spectator sport.
