DOE warns against employment fraud to UAE

BANGKOK, 1 December 2016 (NNT) – The Department of Employment (DOE) has issued a warning for Thai jobseekers against illegal employment agencies claiming to arrange jobs in the United Arab Emirates using tourist visas.

According to DOE Director-General Singhadet Chu-umnart, the department was informed that the labour office in Abu Dhabi has been rescuing and deporting Thai nationals that were duped into working in the UAE on tourist visas.

Most people travelling through this scheme end up working in massage parlors and have their passport seized by their employer, who then refuse to apply for employment visas on their behalf. Therefore, the Thai workers are unable to file formal complaints should they come into conflict with their employers, for fear of being prosecuted and deported.

In the DOE statement, the department warned jobseekers against job offers that claim they can arrange employment through tourist visas. Singhadet affirmed that everyone working abroad must hold a valid employment visa and are required to report themselves to the labor checkpoint at airports prior to traveling.

He warned that those advertising fraudulent offers face a jail sentence of 3 - 10 years, a fine of 60,000 - 200,000 baht, or both.

How much do those scammed into these sort of jobs usually or on average have to pay the scum who traffic them?

I would think most of Dubai was built with low paid labor. There are always programs on TV of workers who have worked and are still awaiting their salaries. Mid tier slavery is all it is. Governments as usual pick the low hanging fruit take a bow in the press and life goes on as before.
