Govt suggested to extend assistance measures for rice farmers

BANGKOK, 2 December 2017 (NNT) - The Office of Agricultural Economics has suggested the government extend its measures to assist farmers and maintain the stability of rice until August, saying the extended measures will help increase the domestic rice price to 9,500 baht/ton.

Director of the Agricultural Economics Operation Center Phumsak Rasri said the measures, which would expire on 28 February 2017, were only short term and most of the farmers entitled to the measures had sufficient rice for sale. He added that the measures did not help raise the rice price because they were too short.

Regarding rice price in the future, the director said it would be similar to the present price but it would likely increase if the measures were extended. The price of jasmine rice would be 8,800 baht/ton and the price of unhusked rice 6,700-7,200 baht/ton, said Mr. Phumsak. He further suggested the government process rice and invest in infrastructure to increase logistics and marketing channels for farmers.

The farmer is getting scamed in my area. They are only getting 7 baht per kilo in my area. The thieves are still out there.

7 Baht, you're on a winner, 5 baht around here, and I am talking jasmine. I am not thinking of selling my rice this year, we will just keep.

Most countries do subsidize farmers. But this means that the government go more into debt.

If you both say 5-7 baht/kg; then the farmers need to fix this problem by organizing to sell at one price. They need leaders in each province to negotiate the best prices. Hard to do but if they stand together they will get a better and more fair price.

The budget looks like going to hell in a hand basket. When the PM announced the 2015/2016 budget the deficit was predicted to be 390 billion, an increase of 56% over the previous year.

Heaven only knows what it looks like now with the rice crisis and other hand outs and wasteful expenditure. The 2016/17 budget should make interesting reading.

this is not populist spending. rice prices must be over inflated to keep farmers over producing. with the human population growing there will eventually be a need for more rice as long as everyone does not turn to a western diet. army needs to start taxing KFC and macdonalds more heavily to stop this.

Prayut presented his FY 2017 budget to the NLA in June 2016 but I haven't seen any published details. It is based on a 2017 growth rate of  3.7-4.2% largely due to anticipated improvement in export sector and progress in the development of infrastructure projects.

In September 2016 the NLA passed unanimously the final reading of the 2017 Budget bill for 2.73 trillion baht.

But again I haven't seen any details on the budget other than 17.9 billion baht in proposed expenditure was reallocated in "conformity with the framework of the 20-year national strategy and the 12th national economic and social development master plan and the government’s key policies." No detail as to what was cut and where specifically that money was allocated.
