The Ministry of Commerce is moving ahead with its plan to convince more farmers sell rice online as an alternative outlet for rice sales.

It expects that no less than 120 tons will be sold by this method.

Minister for Commerce Aphiradee Tantraporn revealed today that she had delegated the Department of International Trade Promotion and the Department of Business Development with the responsibility of handling the ‘Thai Smart Farmers Promotion’ campaign.

The campaign is to provide support to farmers to sell rice via the Thairice.com website which will serve as the central market place for E-commerce for agricultural products.

The main task will be to attract more and more farmers to join in the program so that they can be accessed with greater ease by consumers.

Maybe an app where farmers can simply sell rice via their iPhones?

120 tons? Not exactly aiming high are they considering a projected total production of 17,000,000 tons this year.

Will that mean that farmers will now be viewing their emails for orders, answering enquiries, providing their payment terms, coordinating with banks to verify payment and arrange delivery??? Forget it.

What sort of BS is this? A huge joke.

Maybe they got the numbers wrong!

Must have got the numbers wrong ?

I think I could sell 120 tons (without a WP) before lunch tomorrow !

This will not necessarily increase demand or consumption of rice! Increased exports is Thailand's only way out of its oversupply of rice. But that may require lower export prices. Basic economics.

Went to http://thairice.com/   Wasnt working for me.
Could be a parked domain.... They just purchased it for this fantastic idea?

I wonder if the govt will help with getting a merchant account, PayPal account etc

They made need to improve the internet infrastructure in farming areas so farmers can sell their rice via the Internet.

Maybe also have some schooling on how to work a computer and go on the Internet

I think its a bit more involved than.. "just go online and sell it there" type scenario

EDIT: I wonder if the Govt. knows that the farmers may learn what farmers in other countries get or how big the world actually is.

Are they having a laugh. Most farmers in remote parts of Thailand don't even know what the internet is, never mind knowing how to use it sell rice or anything else on line.

The domain was first registered in 1998 and hasn't been used at all. Looks like a domain squatter.
Registered to someone in Suphanburi.

You
Don't get out into the rural areas much where just about every woman is addicted to Facebook. But yes, my fellow 60 year old menfolk who are rice farmers, like my brother in-law, do not use the Internet at all, those under 50 sure do. But unless you own a large field this proposal makes no sense and many local small padi owners already sell directly to neighbors in the surrounding tambons. No need for Internet.

Trump d'III

It has to be made easy, very easy, everything on one page, all the financials and transport done by the local government, one click and your done or forget it.

They obviously left out the key element which makes this whole plan viable . . . . POKEMON GO!!!!!

It already saved tourism this year.  Why stop there?
