Thai police arrest foreign con men preying on elderly Thai/Chinese

BANGKOK: -- Police in Bangkok have announced the arrest of two Chinese men preying on the gullibility of old Chinese/Thai people.

Li Peng, 48, and Li Cai Hong were arrested Saturday while trying to befriend elderly people in the fresh food market in Lat Prao Soi 51.

But three other fraudsters managed to run off.

The two fraudsters were persuading Chinese speaking Thais who believe in Chinese mysticism to part with money.

Chock Chai area police said they had stolen about a million baht and gone back to China to spend it before returning to Thailand to get more victims.

Should read "Two Chinese were......"

As they no longer point I'm unable to distinguish who the culprits are...

If they're not Thai, then they are "foreign"...

Personally, I don't think that nationality is relevant. They are con men tricking gullible people.

PS I'm not trying to get into a debate with you about it. I'm not that serious about the topic ?

" The two fraudsters were persuading Chinese speaking Thais who believe in Chinese mysticism to part with money"

Is it a crime in Thailand for people to hand over money in return for "Mystical" benefit?

Plenty of money gets handed over to Merc owning Abbots to obtain "merit".

Perhaps the "contract" was not fulfilled, or the "goods" were faulty?

Maybe it was fake Chinese mysticism they were pedaling and not genuine Thai mysticism?

Perhaps they were just threatening to summon demons unless paid protection money?

How dare they compete with our hardworking and honest Thai fortune-tellers who are not con-men.

robbing the elderly is more common here than many people may think. I have see / heard about quite a bit.

the wife's grandmother was like 90 years old and a chinese immigrant who had dementia to such a degree she could not understand or even remember her own family. she was not very mobile and sat inside the shop house or just outside, as they do.

she was more comfortable speaking in chinese, perhaps influenced by dementia?...

and some fast talking chinese speaking guys came by and lifted gold off her like taking candy. this is all very strange because I know how she guards those red / pink envelopes when we give them to her. she keeps them in her pocket and opens them to count money and will fight you if you try to take them :) that is cute fun with grandma. guys stealing some serious gold off her neck and wrist are less charming.

Quality tourists from China  There will be more and more of this in the future from Chinese scum.

It is fraud to obtain money by deception, receiving unsolicited money by a temple for merit is not fraud.

Honestly who employs these police. I know there useless but please presentation counts. They could not catch a cold. All tip offs. 1 million robbing Thais more and I not feel sorry for these widows of the night.

My wife used to go to a Chinese Thai seer in the village. Apparently the old bird was quite near the mark and my wife told me some things that no one but her would know. I told her there were ways that these people worked ,that could give them information.

Mrs Kaen said "no! she knows all and sees the future. You must come with me next time.So the next week, down we trotted to this old birds house.Upon arrival we saw there was a notice on the door that read "closed, due to unforeseen circumstances!":cheesy::cheesy:

I think the problem may be it's a reserved occupation.

Receiving unsolicited money is not fraud. However, accepting/receiving money for 'merit' is the textbook definition of fraud. Might as well be forking over dough to the Panthip soothsayers.

Isn't that what all religious institutions do, though ? If we just replace a few words, it becomes universal :

The two fraudsters priests/preachers/imams/monks were persuading Chinese speaking Thais human beings who believe in Chinese mysticism to part with money.

Looks like a lot of people ought to be arrested ...

Could just have easily read "Police in Bangkok have announced the arrest of thousands of Thai girls preying on the gullibility of old bar fly farang." Of course that would never happen.

Did you not know half of Thailand is Chinese stock....

I thought the PM said no more parading suspects on front of the media. Such disrespect for the supreme Leader. How can the Police show such disrespect!

Yes, I did.  Did you not know that they are Thai, regardless of what "stock" their families once were?

Where does the other half originate from? Burma, Loas, Cambodia or Malaysia? I heard that many Thai's have a bit of Indian in them. Anyone know the origins of Thai people and any photos of subsets of typical mixed race Thais in areas of Thailand. In their natural habitats.

Ha ha,nooooo,i meant the Disney cartoon version.

She died of a fever and was buried in Gravesend, kent ,England. She had come over and was giving the locals talks on what it was like to be an Indian princess.Unfortunately the grave was never marked and was built over by some fool.So her grave is lost forever. She never married John Smith. But she did marry another John who was a textile merchant. So the stories of her leave a lot to be desired.I will show the picture you sent to mrs Kaen.By the way,her name was Rebecca, which meant little mischief. Its my daughters name too.

Thanx
