Two more people have died from drinking tainted rice wine in Kampong Chhnang province’s Teuk Pho district, bringing the total to 15 deaths. District police officer Lim Bunsong added that since November 18, 79 people in Kdol Senchey commune have also been taken to hospital from drinking tainted rice wine, but most have been released.

“The death toll now is at 15 and this figure is from November 18 to December 9. They did not all occur on one day or all at one time,” Mr. Bunsong told Khmer Times. “Seventy-nine others were originally hospitalized, but now only 31 remain in the provincial hospital.

“According to the preliminary report from the doctor, it is caused by the rice wine.” He added that three winery owners were also being questioned in relation to the production of rice wine, some of which contained dangerous levels of methanol.
