Rescue workers continue their search Saturday at a collapsed building in Soi Sukhumvit 87.

BANGKOK — Police said Saturday they charged engineers responsible for the demolition of a building in Soi Sukhumvit 87 where at least two workers were killed when it collapsed and two remain missing.

Developer, Krittatchaya Sriwanna and engineer Kittiphong Yootairomboon were charged for recklessness resulting in death over the Friday incident, according to Bangkok Police Chief Sanit Mahathavorn.

The offense carries a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and a 20,000 baht fine.

And a 20,000 baht fine? That should provide some discouragement for other developers and engineers. Yes, I know there is also a term of imprisonment (if enforced).

Often it says "and/or", so that could be 20,000 baht only – perhaps used if other compensation are satisfactory settled...

Usually if it's the first offence, the fine only is applied.

I hope not.  20,000THB is only 570 bucks.

It's Gravity's fault, "It's the Law".

You obviously don't have a mia noi. Less than 1 baht weight of gold just don't make the cut.

Perhaps it depends on the contacts the developer and engineer have. If in the hiarchy of this country then the authorities can claim justice was served by imposing a 20,000 bht fine. In any case I suspect that 20,000 baht is a misprint and at least one nought was left off.

Judge Roy Bean, Law West of the Pecos says:

The Engineer and Developer are required to finish the demolition work by themselves, to the very end until every last scrap of material is removed and as long as it takes them...... and pay a fine of 20,000 baht each...plus1 million baht to the families of the deceased workers.
