City workers use heavy machinery to remove concrete slabs yesterday in an effort to retrieve the bodies of two demolition workers from the debris of a collapsed building in Sukhumvit Soi 87 in Bangkok.

BANGKOK: -- POLICE HAVE charged the managing director and engineer of a demolition firm over the collapse of an eight-storey building in Bangkok that killed four workers on Friday.

Boy Ocean Star Company had insisted that it subcontracted the job to another firm, Mega Tools.

However, police have charged Boy Ocean Star managing director Mana Kaewmanee and the firm’s engineer Kittipong Yootairomboon with recklessness causing deaths and wounds, mental and emotional, to others.

Both denied any wrongdoing and were released on bail of Bt120,000 each.

Ahhh... subcontract the job out and pocket the price difference, and we wash our hands of any responsibilities...

Any inactive posts?

Same ol' same ol'. Never take responsibility or accountability. I know for a fact that the main contractor is still responsible for review, approval and monitoring of both an HSE and QC Plan.

I wonder who is responsible for the fellow up in the loader bucket (above 6 feet) with no safety harness. I wonder who he will blame. The operator made me get in.

As I've stated before, all of the frustration we feel over incidents as these is due to the fact that on this side of the planet the powers that be have been able to assign a value to a human beings life. Fatality>>apology>>blood money paid>>ok bring in the replacement workers. I've personally witnessed it in many countries. So sad.

It is normal practice for many construction companies, both here and overseas, to sub-contract out demolition of buildings this size to a company which specialises in demolition. This particular incident is not clear as if the company that undertook the demolition and was a specialist demolition company then they are totallky responsible, not the original contractors. If the company did not specialise in demolition then both companies are at fault.

Interesting but even in western countries how often do high level Execs face actual consequenses?

Deepwater Horizon. corporation pleads guilty felony counts resulting in death/enormous disaster (Nice legal fiction that a corporation is a person, you can't jail it can you?) Charges of manslaughter against rig supervisors dropped.

Accidents do happen on the job site. I'm sure the sub-contractor were also qualified.

They will pay to usual 100,000 / worker who died, and will not allow workers to wear Flip Flops in the future.

Sorry for the families.
