BANGKOK, 21 December 2016 (NNT) – The Minister of Tourism and Sports disclosed that over 8.5 Chinese tourists visited Thailand in 2016 before revealing the government's tourism strategic plan 2017 to push Thailand towards becoming the tour hub of ASEAN.

Tourism and Sports Minister Korpkarn Watthanavarangkun disclosed that over 31.3 million tourists had visited Thailand during 1 January to 20 December 2016, higher than last year's figures by 9.2 percent, while most tourists were from China.

In 2016, the Tourism and Sports Ministry aims to make Thailand the hub of tourism in five areas including sports tourism, medical and wellness, wedding and romance, maritime tourism and ASEAN.

In terms of domestic tourism, the strategy will focus on local experience in five main activities including traveling by train, evening tours, tourism for all, conferences and seminars, and tourism projects along 70 routes following in the footsteps of His late Majesty King Rama IX.

The Tourism and Sports Minister said that tourism continued to expand in the first quarter of 2016 and projected that Thailand would attract more than 32 million travelers this year. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/903857-tourism-industry-in-thailand-continues-to-expand-in-q1/

Why the infatuation of stats of Chinese visitors? The don't put money into the local economy... do you see them out eating dinner in different restaurants, no you don't!  You will only ever see them going to a prearranged chinese restaurant.  Do you ever see them enjoying a quiet beer in a bar... never!!  You see them going to 711 or Macro and buying up to take to their hotel rooms.  You see them dangerously trying to ride a motor bike and navigate on their smart phones - at the same time.  Quality tourists...NOT!

I have seen them in bars, not drinking, just sitting for a few minutes taking photos of people drinking...weird!!

I'm not the junta's biggest fan, but all the doubt and lies peddled in any topic on tourism numbers is profoundly puzzling.

The one sensible comment was that these would indeed be 'arrivals' which includes also people not here for tourism purposes.

But there can be no doubt that numbers are up.   If you choose not to believe the government (because, reasons) then take a look at Flightradar24 or anything else that shows flight operations into Thailand.

So unless you're so far out to lunch that you think the conspiracy involves flying empty planes into Thailand, y'all frankly are full of it.
