Four more products added to DIP's GI list

BANGKOK, 2 January 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has added 4 more items to the nation’s list of products with Geographical Indications (GI), likely boosting the value and sales of the goods.

Commerce Minister Aphiradee Tantraporn revealed that on December 27 2016, the DIP announced the registration of 4 new items to its GI list. The 4 are Lanzones from Narathiwat, Durian from Prachinburi, Pineapple from Ratchaburi and Dried Longan from Lamphun. The additions bring Thailand’s GI list to 75 products representing 53 provinces. Another 15 goods are currently pending approval for addition.

The department noted 9 provinces of the nation have not submitted any products for consideration and it is working to have items from all 77 provinces of the nation on its list.

Products that have GI status, which indicates the particular item is of a special or higher standard that can only be found from its particular origin, enjoy higher value on the market and a better image as their quality is guaranteed. The Ministry of Commerce is seeking to have more GI listed goods to boost the income of local producers.
