Government clamps down on rice exploiters

As a measure to help poor farmers from exploitation amid the current rice price fall, the government has clamped down on unethical and selfish rice millers and rice depots operators with almost 50 rounded up for their fraudulent practices and exploiting farmers

The Department of Internal Trade reported that 45 rice millers and operators were arrested during its campaign against exploitation of farmers.

All were found guilty of taking unfair advantage of rice farmers and they will face legal proceedings and that will land them in jails and hefty fines.

Director-general of the Department of Internal Trade Ms Nanthawan Sakunthanak said continuous checks on rice traders in Pathumthani, Ayuthaya, Ang Thong, Singhburi, Chainat, Nakhon Sawan, Pichit and Pitsanulok provinces, were made to ensure that rice millers and rice traders were complying with laws governing rice operations.

The check was to ensure that farmers are not exploited by them.

Yes great initiative and a great effort. Now if only they could set some new goals to apprehend exploiters in other sections of the economy and within the government itself. It's not as if there is a shortage of them.

Yes they can go after illegal money lenders and start on the ones in Phuket- scum!

Why not country wide ?

It isn't the Rice millers they need to look at, it is the third party middlemen vermin that hold the rice contracts to export the rice!

For the 1000th time !!!!

They need to do this country wide, not just in a select few provinces, at least it's a start even if the cynic inside of me thinks that these particular millers probably support one particular colour....

Given that they found breaking of the rules by the millers, they are right to look there.

This government is doing a lot more against corruption as any other ever did. Too bad that its silent on cases that concern their own. But still better than nothing.

If true they will be fined heavily or jailed, fantastic! But if more useless threats of such and minimal penalties handed out, b's as usual from the Govt
