Cambodian monks defrocked in Thailand

Featured Replies

Eight Cambodian monks were arrested and defrocked by authorities in Thailand’s Samut Prakan province on Monday over their alleged involvement in gambling, according to the Cambodian National Police website. Police identified the monks as Em Reoung, Chhann Sina, Chhann Kiet, Sim Sarak, Nget Ploy, Ti Chhath Kut, Chhuon Bunarith and Kreng Chetra.

Thai police made the arrests after being informed by locals of several dozen suspicious monks who had been begging for alms. “Thai police went and arrested the monks while they were sitting in a circle in the forest playing cards,” the website said.

Thai police transferred the undisciplined monks to Buddhist religious authorities to be defrocked after being arrested. “Thailand’s cults and religion department defrocked them and transferred them back to the police to take legal action according to Thai laws,” the website said, adding that Thai police also confiscated a pack of cards and some money.
