BANGKOK: -- THE GOVERNMENT yesterday announced the launch of its ambitious “bio-economy” scheme, which it expects to draw Bt400 billion worth of investment from the private sector during the next 10 years.

Speaking at the signing ceremony for a memorandum of understanding between the public and private sectors and educational and research institutes to kick off the programme, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said the planned “Biopolis”, a core part of the scheme, would be better than Singapore’s, since unlike that country, Thailand could leverage on its agricultural sector.

Bio-industry is one of the 10 targeted industries that the government is striving to promote as new economic growth engines.

There are laughs aplenty in this morning's news.  Deputy PM Somkid certainly seems to have learn a lot of new buzz words and cliches.

Especially with this "Bipolis" story being reported as a "growth engine" and it will be a "cluster development". And they are "aiming high" to provide “food and feed of the future”

It is a change from it being a "hub" I suppose. And it is going to bigger and better than Singapore. Wow!

"...Uttama said PTT and other private investors were “nearly committed” to investing.....". That certainly doesn't have much of a ring of confidence about it.

I hope it works for them but the military's reputation for not being able to walk the talk just about puts the kibosh on it before it even gets started.

In any other country, Somkid would be a plaid or checkered suit clad used car salesman.  "Better than Singapore", it would a triumph if in any it was even remotely competitive.  Singapore is happy to work with others to achieve success.  Something Thailand has a great deal of trouble doing.

But what does it all mean,in simple terms ?

I (also) think Thailand will have problems with this due to its isolationist tendencies.

This is what it really means..............

“We’re doing all these things not because of the private sector but for the farmers. So whatever we do, |we must think of what farmers will get. Don’t destroy the ecology, and the livelihood of the people,” he said.

Translated into 'opportunities to make even more out of the farmers and screw the ecology'

Very little if the past is anything to go by.  It is a fair bet that you will never hear of any of it again.

Growing more sugar-cane and tapioca. That seems to be it.

Seems like this government likes to bamboozle the undereducated masses with b's and thinking they are impressing international community. Rather pathetic given the show they put on.
