Ministry: Vietnam casino no threat

Cambodia’s casino industry will be affected slightly by a Vietnamese government decision to allow its own people to gamble in domestic casinos, the Ministry of Economy and Finance said yesterday. On Friday, the Vietnamese government published a decree that paves the way for selected domestic casinos to accept bets from Vietnamese gamblers for a trial three-year period, according to GGR Asia, an Asia gaming web portal.
 

Ros Phearun, a deputy director-general of the Finance Ministry’s financial industry department, said that the decree will not affect severely Cambodia’s casino industry. The decree applies only to two casinos far from Cambodia’s casinos at the Cambodia-Vietnam border.
 

“Of course, we will definitely get some effect by the new move from the Vietnamese government. But, it doesn’t mean that it severely affects the whole industry here because they will only let local people gamble at two selected casinos which are really far from us,” he said. “One is at the north part of Vietnam in Hanoi and the other at Phu Quoc island,” he said.
