Sokha minority snub date nears

Acting opposition leader Kem Sokha moves a step closer to losing his minority leadership status in the National Assembly (NA) today when the assembly Permanent Committee meets to set a date to discuss the topic. The Permanent Committee meeting follows a request by ruling CPP members for a review of assembly rules.
 

Prime Minister Hun Sen wants to abolish the positions of majority and minor group leaders. Minority leadership status gave Mr. Sokha a position from which to conduct a dialogue with the government. Leng Peng Long, the secretary-general and spokesman of the NA, said 50 CPP members, more than a third of the number in parliament, wished to conduct an urgent session in accordance with the law.
 

Mr. Peng Long said he had invited both the CPP and CNRP heads of 10 parliament commissions for this morning’s meeting. He was unsure whether the CNRP would take part because the discussion would be led by the head of the Permanent Committee, who is a CPP member.
