The Phnom Penh Municipal Governor acknowledged that the recently implemented village-commune safety policy has been less than effective after recent crime statistics showed an increase in crime in 2016 compared with the previous year. According to a City Hall meeting held over the past two days, criminal offenses in Phnom Penh last year increased by 23 percent last year compared with 2015.

The report said 993 criminal offenses occurred in 2016, resulting in 53 deaths and 235 injuries. In 2015, there were 765 criminal offenses that caused 36 deaths and 118 injuries. Felonies and misdemeanors also increased last year with 182 felonies being reported and 751 misdemeanors.

Phnom Penh Governor Pa Socheatvong said during Tuesday’s meeting that his administration would pay closer attention to the village and commune safety policies to maintain security and public order. “While we have seen many positive results, the administration of City Hall still has work to do and some new challenges have to be resolved in 2017 including security, public order and law implementation,” he said.
