BANGKOK, 3 February 2017 (NNT) - The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has disclosed the number of international patent applicants has increased consecutively for five years, while the number of Thai international patent applicants increased from 68 to 132 in 2016. 

DIP Director General Thotsaphol Thangsubut has disclosed findings from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s 2016 report on international patent application through the PCT system, that the number of international patent applications has continued to increase for five consecutive years, up by 1.7 percent. 

Thailand now ranks as a top middle-income country with a remarkable increased in international patent applications, while Thai international patent applicants increased from 68 to 132. 

The top three companies in Thailand who had applied for international patents include PTT Public Company Limited, Honda Motor (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and SCG, Ltd. 

Foreign entrepreneurs on the other hand, applied for a total of 31,116 international patents through the PCT system in Thailand.
