BANGKOK: -- Starting on Tuesday, the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking will be increased 0.67 baht per kilogramme or ten baht increase for a gas cylinder of 15 kgs, said Deputy Commerce Minister Sonthirat Sonthichirawong on Monday.

He believed that slight increase of the cooking gas will not much affect the costs of plate food because a cylinder of 15 kgs of gas can cook up to 300 plates of Thai fast food or an increase of just 10 satang per plate.

Wasn't there an article recently from the Government saying gas bottle prices were set and would not rise for a number of months?

15kg cylinder cost: 345baht.

UK price: about 1600baht.

Minimum wage in UK £61 a day or 2684 bht Thailand, 300 bht, puts it into perspective.

I love how the govt minister said the increase shouldn't increase the price of things.    Of course not Mr Minister...a small increase in tax such as this small increase on LPG never causes price increases.   Why you could do small increases a couple times per year for a thousand years and it would not increase prices.

Strange universe the minister lives in.   But the universe I live in when taxes increases the cost of goods/services such as LPG then that cost is "eventually" passed along the customer sooner or later.

Maybe not on the first or second small increase but by the  third or so small increase the "additional tax straw breaks the camel's back" and prices are raised usually by an amount much larger than the last small tax increase.   So, is this latest small increase the straw that drives increases?  Mostly likely the answer is Yes for some businesses but No for others....but "eventually" it will cause an increase to customers.
