Ministry of Commerce says Trump administration economic policies will not directly impact Thailand

BANGKOK, 7 February 2017 (NNT) – A Ministry of Commerce study on the impacts of the Trump Administration’s economic policies on Thailand has indicated no direct affects on the Kingdom for the time being except for an opportunity posed by the United State’s possible downsizing of trade with China and Mexico.

The Ministry of Commerce’s Bureau of Policy and Planning has issued the results of a study on the economic policies of US President Donald Trump.

The research has posited that Thailand will not be directly impacted for the time being and may soon see an opportunity to increase trade to China and Mexico as the US draws down its economic relations with the two countries.

It also noted that the US’ decision to back out of the Trans Pacific Trade Partnership (TPP) has allowed Thailand to avoid losing competitiveness to signatories Vietnam and Malaysia.

Products to benefit from the development include computer equipment, electronic appliances, plastic beads, metals, gems and jewelry, frozen seafood and energy.

While the US is still considering Thailand’s status in terms of intellectual property violations and its Generalized System of Preferences privileges, the first quarter will likely not factor in the two matters.

Overall, the ministry is still confident Thai exports will grow 2.5 to 3.5 percent this year but pointed out issues to watch include trade with China, currency fluctuations and the movement of foreign investment.

This begs the question.... what economic policies??  Trump has some policies?  Further, he has muttered on about tariffs - these will dramatically affect Thailands Trade one way or another.  Good to see the MoC understands all this :(

I was going to say the same thing. But assuming he does come out with a policy to downsize imports from China, how would Thailand escape impact, since it is a part of China's supply chain. China will also import less finished products from Thailand and send less tourists, if its income is diminished. What a boneheaded analysis.

This goes beyond wishful thinking, more into La La Land.

Teflon Thailand.
