I'm looking for information about any orthopaedic surgeon who has experience with arthroscopic knee surgery in Bangkok.

If anyone has had this surgery in Bangkok, please provide doctor and hospital recommendations.

I've been to several hospitals and some haven't even diagnosed me properly as I've some doctors said I've got torn ACL and some said my ACL is not torn (all looking at the exact same MRI)

I've been to Bumrungrad as well, and the price was quoted as 470,000 Baht (rather expensive-nearly as expensive as Western hospitals).

Thank you

+1 to the above, many TV members have been treated by Dr. Panya. But indeed, that is an expensive hospital.

If nothing else, worth consulting him for an opinion given the uncertainty over diagnosis, even if you ultimately get treated elsewhere.

ACL tears do not always require surgery, depends on many factors including whether there are other injuries present  (damage to meniscus etc).

Physical exam can tell quite a bit, if doctors look only at the MRI without doing a thorough physical exam I'd be wary.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, Dr. Panya doesn't seem to work at any other hospitals.

Bumrungrad estimated 460,000 - 490,000 Baht for arthoscopic ACL surgery.  Dr Channarong was my physician, and he seems definitely well qualified, but looking for a physician at a hospital I can afford.

Anybody have any other hospitals to recommend?

I would still suggest a consult with Dr. Panya just to get another opinion as to whether or not surgery is indicated. I would have great confidence in his judgement.

If surgery is indicated, the least expensive option is a government hospital.

The best expertise in this in govt hospitals is at Lerdsin Hospital. I do not know if they have an "after hours" or "premium" clinic but nowadays many government hospitals do, I suggest you have a Thai speaker call and ask. If so, try to get an appointment with Prof. Suriyapong Saowaprut

If they have a private channel like this it will still be much, much less expensive than a private hospital.  Going through the public channel, I don't recommend if you can avoid it, as then you cannot choose your doctor and much of the care (and the surgery) will be done by residents in training.

Private options (will still be expensive, but less than Bumrungrad, probably by about 20-25% though need to check to verify):

This doctor at Vejthani Hospital https://www.vejthani.com/doctors_detail.php?DoctorCode=90361

This doctor at Paolo Hospital in Rangsit area,

Actually, I misquoted, the estimate was 360,000 to 400,000 Baht. Still too expensive for me :P

I saw Doctor Panya today.

He was worth every Baht (1800 Baht just for a consultation). He did some stress tests on my knee and looked at my MRI and said that my ACL is fine.  My patella fracture still hasn't healed and if it doesn't get better in 2 more months, I will see him again.

After I told him he was highly recommended, he said that when he did his first surgery 22 years ago, there had only been 5 arthroscopic knee surgeries in Thailand. He knows his stuff and I would recommend him to anyone who can afford it lol.

Actually as you discovered,  a visit with him can be a significant money saver (not to mention avoiding the pain and risks of necessary surgery).

Glad all went well.  Your experience highlights the importance of second and even third opinions before undergoing this type of surgery.

Yes, agreed, 1800 Baht is a small price to pay for piece of mind. It was also encouraging that Dr. Panya was willing to contradict one of his colleagues by telling me I didn't need surgery and that my ACL was not torn. It was actually another doctor at Bumrungrad who said I needed surgery in the first place.
