Can I buy a decent quality Treadmill under 20,000 baht? ?

Feel like I need  bit more exercise, but as I'm in my 70's I think walking is probably the best way to get it. However, walking around the streets in my area is fraught with danger, what with soi dogs, potholes and broken footpaths etc, it's not a pleasant experience. With a treadmill I can walk for an hour or so in the comfort of my own home, and listen to music or watch TV whilst I'm doing it. I had a look at Lazadas offerings and there are 3 hp treadmills available for as low as 17,000 baht, but are they any good? None in that price range offer a warranty which is a bit of a concern, so any other (sensible) suggestions?

A cross country trainer could be cheaper and a better all round work out,  they will:

work out your upper body as well as legs, have a lot less impact on your knees, they are also said to burn more calories than other gym machines.

Oh and they don't make half the noise either

What is a cross country trainer?  A Google search shows running shoes. I find it now, elliptical cross trainer. Hmm, maybe. Looks a bit too strenuous for someone of my age.

I bought this one from Lazada.

its not bad,  its not extra strong but does the job

it has developed a squeak , but for a cheapo

8900 ,  its ok   . think it was 450 for delivery

i use it 30 minutes a day.

Ps if you use this machine on very high tension setting, i don't think it would last so long.

i only use tension setting 1, and its fine

Just go slow on it. However if you have any back problems they can be difficult to use.

I do have a bit of a back problem, I also have a laziness problem. I figured a treadmill only requires me to walk, same principal as a hamster wheel.

Yeah true enough but the cross trainer will give you much more benefit and is more efficient. You can still watch TV while doing it. Anyway up to you it is your choice. :)

Walking doesn't do much. You need your heart rate elevated. Just Google what a safe elevation is for your age. Very brisk walking would work

I'm pretty sure you can set the speed on a treadmill from a casual amble to breaking the 4 minute mile.

Doesn't make you want to stop and rub one out?

If you only want to walk.. not run then i think you certainly would get a good one for 20k. Because the device would not be used to harsh.

But be careful it might just gather dust there because motivation is crucial. I am pretty motivated in general, i hardly skip weightlifting sessions. But cardio session.. pff I hate them and its hard for me to do them often. I do try and I have periods that it goes well but in general i find it hard.

A tv in front of it with just walking or fast walking might do it.

I doubt if I'll be doing any serious running, maybe a leisurely jog. I'm just under 90 kg so I think most of them will stand that kind of weight.

You do know what "rub one out" means? A Jodrell Bank as we used to say.

I think the one you selected (sorry no expert on treadmills) would do a fine job if your not running but just fast walking. The more it is stressed the easier it breaks. 20k is not much for a treadmill (if you want quality you pay a lot more) but given that you are probably not going to do any serious running this might just suffice.

I only know that treadmills are (relatively)expensive if you want quality because they come under more stress as devices like the crosstrainer or rowing machine.

But I was serious about making sure you are motivated, most home fitness equipment is not used a lot. But there are people (me and others that I know) that use it and are happy training at home. The majority is not, depends really on what kind of person you are. Not trying to be mean here just helpful that you are sure you want it else its just a waste. But if your the right kind of person something like this could be real useful.

Yes,   but i do believe you need a work permit for that.

can't go putting people out of work can we.

Do you know what a prince Albert was originally all about ? :giggle:

I use my elliptical 5-6 times a week. My usual workout is 10K, in 40 minutes. The brand is Proform (here review),  and it is 7 years old and is a basic model, Strangely I bought one from the Soi Cat and Dog society. Used. Good price. It seems that many people donate decent things for them to sell to raise funds.  Still works like brand new, never any problems. I used to run/jog but it was hard on my knees and that is why I love the elliptical, never any knee issues, no stress.I don't think using the elliptical makes me a better runner, but it is good cardio.

An elliptical trainer can hurt the knees depending on what is wrong with them. It hurts my knees. They put a very unusual, unnatural stress on the knees and the rest of the body. You don't move this way in normal life and it can cause muscular imbalances.

Here's a good read to get a better understanding of the problem:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/525935-can-ellipticals-cause-knee-and-hip-pain/

If you buy a cheap elliptical trainer, the problems could be even worse.

You can burn more calories than walking, but it may come at a cost. The  OP has been walking most of his life - better he sticks to something he knows he can do.

Just one point about walking on a treadmill. It's easier than walking on the ground as you don't push yourself forward. You need a slight incline to equal the intensity of a flat walk outside.

It's actually called elyptical machine and it's better for sure, but maybe not for someone who is 70.

If you only walk a cheap treadmill will be ok for few months/years, if you run, nothing under 200k is worth spending.

Right, the guy who replied you to by eliptical knows nothing about real life.

Just walk at least 1 hour daily is ok for you.

Back problems or not this is wrong at 70 except for very healthy people.

himself.   maybe you should read his first post.

it may help you.

I used to walk more than an hour a day in Australia, but that's because it was a pleasant and safe thing to do. Can't say the same about walking in Thailand, hence the treadmill.

There are very nice walking tracks around Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai). From 4 pm on you can walk in the shade too. The roads are closed to motor vehicles and bikes from 4 pm each day.
