BANGKOK, 24 February 2017 (NNT) – Thai and Vietnamese officials have agreed that the setting up of a joint commission on security will bring the two countries closer and allow them to better tackle shared issues such as illegal fishing.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan has visited Vietnam on invitation from his counterpart Gen Ngo Xuan Lich, spending the visit strengthening security relations between Thailand and its neighbor.

Both officials voiced approval towards the establishment of a joint security commission, pointing out it will likely aid in addressing the issue of illegal fishing while assuring such efforts will be taken with consideration towards human rights and international relations.

On the occasion, the Vietnamese minister thanked Thailand for its assistance in locating the remains of Vietnamese citizens who lost their lives in the Kingdom.

A Vietnamese delegation is slated to meet with the Prime Minister soon to reiterate economic plans as Vietnam targets increasing trade with Thailand to 20 billion USD by the year 2020.
