Featured Replies

The opposition CNRP will hold its next party congress on Thursday as rumors swirl that former party president Sam Rainsy has suggested appointing one president and three deputy presidents, including his wife, to avoid internal strife. One day before the congress, the party will conduct an internal meeting to elect nominees standing for president and deputy president.

The congress will have three agenda items: to congratulate candidates running in June’s commune council elections, to discuss and adopt a political message for the elections and to elect both a president and deputy president. The CNRP’s Standing Committee set the date of the congress after Mr. Rainsy resigned earlier this month and after amendments to the Law on Political Parties, which requires each party to elect a president in less than 90 days.

Rumors and a leaked audio recording on social media stated that the opposition will organize the leadership under the formula of one president and three deputies – Kem Sokha as president and Mr. Rainsy’s wife Tioulong Saumura, Yim Sovann and Pol Hom as deputy presidents. Mr. Hom, however, denied the rumor, adding that he would lead Wednesday’s internal meeting.
