Govt: Article 44 assists officials in pursuit of Dhammachayo

BANGKOK, 01 March 2017, (NNT) - The Government has insisted that the invocation of Article 44 of the 2014 interim charter is to assist officials in the pursuit of the former abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha made a statement stressing that authorities will not resort to violence and that cooperation from all sides is needed to accelerate the search. He later assigned Minister of Justice Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana to hold talks with the followers of the monastery in order to find a solution within the legal framework.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan told the media that there are no changes to the search strategy. He then reiterated that the operation takes time and urged fugitive monk Dhammachayo to surrender himself, in order to avoid further complications.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) Songsak Raksaksakul has indicated that the international community understands the situation, underlining that officials are carrying out the search operation with respect for human rights.
