Statement on Surapong case expected next Thursday

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) will make the open statement on the case of former foreign minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul before the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) next Thursday.

 

The NLA on Thursday rejected Surapong’s request to submit additional five sets of documentary evidence and decided also not to set up a panel to gather evidence or summarise the case.

Former Foreign Minister Surapong to give impeachment statement in mid-March

 

BANGKOK, 10 March 2017 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has turned down former Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul’s request to submit more evidence to defend himself against an impeachment motion filed by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). 

Surapong asked to present five documents to prove that one of the NACC members is not qualified to be a commissioner since he holds a position in a public company. The NACC, however, denied Surapong’s claim, saying all the NACC commissioners had all the needed qualifications. 

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs faces the impeachment motion as he allegedly issued a passport for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2011. 

The NLA resolved not to allow Surapong to submit more evidence and refused to set up a fact-finding committee, explaining that the case was not that complex. Surapong and the NACC are scheduled to give their opening statements on March 16th.

Rather than offer any actual defense to the actual charge, try to deflect, discredit the people and process, delay, and request to submit a lot of irrelevant extra information.

 

Very simple question: did you issue new passports to your cousin, who you know is a wanted criminal fugitive? Did yo hand deliver those passports to him in Dubai? Who paid all the associated costs?

 

If it was somebody else, perhaps Yingluck, who instructed it then he has a defense. Although just following orders didn't work terribly well in Nuremburg.
