BANGKOK: -- About 2.2 million rai of second-crop rice in the Chao Phraya river basin are at risk of being damaged or entirely wiped out due to critical water shortage, Agriculture Minister General Chatchai Sarikalaya disclosed on Wednesday.

He said the ministry had designated 2.67 million rai of rice farmland in the Chao Phraya river basin for second-croup cultivation, but actual cultivation has increased to 5.35 million rai, with the additional rice-cultivated farmland in areas without access to irrigation system, scattering in 105 districts in 34 provinces.

And Saturday the leader swore enough water for the drought. Lip service at its best

Anyone planting off season rice in at risk areas after last years drought should know better. They have been told not to plant off season rice so no violins.

Oh dear ..those claims of ample water didn't last long .. Whose surprised that this is the case ! If it's just average year for drought they will be in big trouble again I'm sure ...

a curious question, can anyone answer me?

how does a Thai get the same perspective an English reader would from The Planet Remade by Oliver Morton??? you know, the stuff that explains why COP21 ****had**** to put 1.5 in the agreement... because of India....... because of exactly how that book begins.... and what it leaves you with forever....if you live in SE Asia.... in Thailand.

1.5 ....... veiling.........The Rainy Season. the dots get connected.

and we ain't had a breakthrough yet.

Am I to believe that to state there may be some risk of poor rainfall that may adversely affect the rice crop is to loose face?

Two Words

Water Storage

But so many cannot understand, Oh well LOS it to be expected

Let me get this straight; you can tell the people there's enough water to cover shortages, then a few days later, it can be said there's not enough? So someone is clearly lying.

But, if you say something negative about someone important (even if it's blatantly true) you can be sued for defamation?

People in power can say anything.

People not in power can't. Only if positive.

This is to be expected , the severity of water shortage needs to be addressed by massive commitments and boat loads of money, neither of which will happen and if they did the timeline would be over 10years, Prayut indeed takes a leaf out of the PTP flood mitigation program , where year in year out everyone was told that the flooding issue was fixed , the only thing that hasn't been fixed is the continual lying that problems have either been fixed or are in the process of being fixed by Government Ministers. ......................................................:coffee1:

I think what our good PM meant was that his house wasn't going to run out of water.

Why on earth would he care about a bunch of peasants needs?

Not so important to the fact that Bangkok will have plenty of water for domestic uses without penalty.

Looks like Prayut will have to extend more subsidies and loans to repeat the lesson the errant rice farmers have learned previously over the last two years - Prayut will give in to pressure from rice farmers.

Was there not a lot of talk in the last few years to not put in a second rice crop? the farmers  were told at the meetings to look for other crops to plant ,crops that don't need a flooded paddock to survive and mature.Other countries do that just look at Australia & India ,Jerusalem.  Now the farmers will start Crying and they want the government to bail them out .Self- inflicted problems that could have been avoided.

Yes. An accurate summary.

and boat loads of money,

The boat loads of money are going for boats submarines. Prestige adequate food is so blaise today.

Guys...this is really no problem!

Just fire up those plains and start with the magical rainmaking!

Problem solved!

Works every time!

It's so hot and dry here that the villagers rely on government officials spitting on them for moisture!
