Consumers set to pay more for electricity from May to August after natural gas price hike

BANGKOK: -- Consumers can expect an extra 20 satang per unit rise on electric bills for the period of May to August.

The rise is because of increased prices for natural gas used in the production of electricity.

The price rise of electricity is due to the FT (fuel tariff or fuel adjustment charge) rate going up.

It varies with usage, but averages about 4.2 Baht per unit for most domestic consumers.

Perfect! The electric has been far too cheap too long time.

Me too! Started to use that in Thailand like 12 years ago. Still a  very cheap electricity bill.

I suppose we are not alone using aircons. I believe most of the foreigners in Thailand do that.

The domestic gas reserves are drying up and this is the future for energy hungry Thailand.

Of potentially more concern is that gas supplies from the Gulf of Thailand are expected to deplete by 2022, which will force increased reliance on LNG imports. According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), increasing reliance on LNG will push up the electricity tariff by 50% by 2022, which will reduce industrial competitiveness and undermine economic growth. According to FTI, Thai investment attractiveness will be reduced if the electricity tariff increases above 5 baht/kWh (US$15c/kWh): with a current average tariff of 3.75 baht/kWh (US$11c/kWh), a 50% increase would push the tariff to over 5.5 baht/kWh (US$17c/kWh).

Do we get a refund for every time there is a blackout?

Scandalous that condominium owners/ management are allowed to charge tenants double the rate per unit they pay the Gov electricity supplier!

No,  the scandel is that owners don't install their own meters and take that revenue stream away from the  condominium owners/ management

The law is clear,  no condominium can prevent you from obtaining your own meter and account with the electric company.  If you are a renter and are that price sensitive then you should pick your abode with that fact in mind

So after August, it will go down?

The fuel tariff is currently a negative, - 0.3729 baht/kwh.  It went down from +0.59 baht/kwh in January so my bill has been less. If the rise is 50 satang it will put it at +12.71 baht/kwh, still cheaper than last year.

The FT on my bills from the PEA is currently -0.3329 and have been unchanged for about half a year.

If you are talking about January of last year then you have to take into account that they around the end of 2015 lowered the FT but at the same time adjusted the base rates up by 48.56 satang.

November 2015:
Base rate: 2.7628 baht

FT: 0.4638 baht

Total: 3.2266 baht

December 2015:

Base rate: 3.2484 baht

FT: -0.0323 baht
Total: 3.2807 Baht

If they raise the FT with 50 satang as in your example then the FT would be 0.1671 baht, which with the current base rate of 3.2484 would mean a total price per unit of 3.41555 Baht. That would make the price higher compared to a year ago, not lower.

I don't know why you seem to have slightly different FT's than charged by my local PEA, I thought the rates were the same countrywide?

Officially they are NOT allowed to raise the price of basic provisions like water and electricity. They may only add an administration fee but this may not be a percentage of the original bill. With other words: It is not allowed to resell electricity nor water provided by "authorities" in Thailand.

Only 19.5% silly.

Thailand has been supporting the Myanmar junta for many years by importing about 15% of there gas needs through a pipeline from Myanmar that has a very dark history!

Lets not talk about that! :shock1:

Thanks for the breakdown just being a wee bit sarcastic on this one. Read the article on the people fighting a new coal power plant.
